Yangon’s 34th Blue Plaque was unveiled at the Head Office of Myanmar National Airlines, located on Kannar Street, Kyauktada Township, this morning. The installation ceremony was attended by the Chief Minister of Yangon Region Government U Phyo Min Thein, Deputy Mayor of Yangon City Development Committee U Soe Lwin and invited guests.
The building occupied by the Myanmar National Airlines Head Office is once home to the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation, arguably one of the most successful exporters of teak during colonial Burma. The building was bought by the Union of Burma Airways in 1949 and later became the Head Office of MNA.
The Founder and Chairman of the Yangon Heritage Trust, Dr. Thant Myint Oo said, “Bombay Burmah played a notorious role in Burmese history. We commemorate this building not to celebrate these erstwhile occupants but as a way of marking and remembering our colonial past, a past that still shapes so much of today.”
